چکیده

Purpose: Recently, segmented 3D-EPI has been proposed for application of BOLD functional MRI at ultra-high fields such as 7 Tesla. Unfortunately, the statistical power, especially of 3D-EPI time series data, is limited by physiological noise (signal fluctuations due to breathing, etc.): with increasing base SNR the temporal SNR (tSNR=AVG/STD with respect to time) tends towards a constant value, which is smaller the more shots per EPI-volume are required. This work compares the tSNR and signal sensitivity (tSNR/√acquisi on me) characteristics of 2D-EPI vs. 3D-EPI under “real-life” conditions, i.e. for different lowand high resolution protocols for fast fMRI data acquisition at 7 and 3 Tesla.

Variable Flip Angles and Echo Train Lengths in Segmented 3D-EPI at 3 and 7 Tesla

Purpose: To increase the signal sensitivity (temporal SNR/√acquisition time) of high-resolution functional MRI by means of two novel segmented 3D-EPI modifications: the use of variable flip angles (vFA) and, optionally, the use of variable echo train lengths (vETL) facilitated by employing elliptical k-space subsampling. While vFA has the potential to increase the base signal-to-noise ratio, vE...

Multishot versus Single-Shot Pulse Sequences in Very High Field fMRI: A Comparison Using Retinotopic Mapping

High-resolution functional MRI is a leading application for very high field (7 Tesla) human MR imaging. Though higher field strengths promise improvements in signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and BOLD contrast relative to fMRI at 3 Tesla, these benefits may be partially offset by accompanying increases in geometric distortion and other off-resonance effects. Such effects may be especially pronounced...

Scan time reduction for readout‐segmented EPI using simultaneous multislice acceleration: Diffusion‐weighted imaging at 3 and 7 Tesla

PURPOSE Readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (rs-EPI) can provide high quality diffusion data because it is less prone to distortion and blurring artifacts than single-shot echo-planar imaging (ss-EPI), particularly at higher resolution and higher field. Readout segmentation allows shorter echo-spacing and echo train duration, resulting in reduced image distortion and blurring, respectively, i...

Temporal SNR characteristics in segmented 3D-EPI at 7T.

Three-dimensional segmented echo planar imaging (3D-EPI) is a promising approach for high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging, as it provides an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at similar temporal resolution to traditional multislice 2D-EPI readouts. Recently, the 3D-EPI technique has become more frequently used and it is important to better understand its implications for fM...

High Temporal Resolution Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging at 7 Tesla

Speed has always been a critical consideration in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), promising dramatic gains in imaging speed, a reduction in motion and susceptibility artifacts, and ultimately increased throughput for clinical studies. In the context of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), MRI pulse sequences designed to increase the speed and spatial resolution have always been a top...
